Intercalated BSc in Speech Sciences

About the degree

The BSc in Speech Sciences is a one-year course for intercalating medical students.

This course would be of value to any medical student with a particular interest in communication and/or in people with communication disorders. The content of the course relates closely to the Professional Development Spine of the medical curriculum at UCL. The taught units give an overview of the speech and hearing sciences which form the basis of human communication. Students study topics concerning the achievement of effective communication between speakers as well as topics about the consequences of communication breakdown. The taught units give an overview of the science, psychology and practical application of the study of speech science and communication. The project will allow students to develop their own interest in the field.

Most students choosing to do the Intercalated BSc in Speech Sciences do so between years 2 and 3 of the MBBS programme. However, the course can also be taken between years 3 and 4, or between years 4 and 5, when medical students will have had some experience with patients.
